The Canton and the Province of Canar are located in the south of the present Republic of Ecuador in the Andes. The name of Canar is composed of two words: Kan means serpent, and Ara, macaw, so if you stick to these meanings are descendants of the Canaris Macaw and the snake.

Our ancestors believed that this was true, but serious opinion, based on hypotheses about the matter, given as the origin of the Canarian people Mesoamerica. (Central America)

Canari’s ancestors were expert potters today the last vestiges of this inherited tradition is found in the ceramics made by the inhabitants of the community Jatupamba. (Quicksilver) The Canaris were also great craftsmen, workers in silver and gold, metals which elaborated exquisite jewels as offerings to their deities, specially dedicated to Killa (Moon) and Inti (Sol) and beautiful rings and earrings. Superb examples of this work have been found in many tombs Canaris.

The occupation of territory extensively by the confederation Canaria, in the fifteenth century, despite their stubborn resistance to the Inca, resigned his freedom, for close to fifteen thousand Canaris were relocated in Peru and Bolivia as mitimaes.

Due to the system of roads built by the Incas (Qhapac Ñan) easily the Spanish conquistadors invaded the Ecuadorian Andes, about a century after the arrival of the Incas, destroying an important culture in the process.

Founded the city of San Francisco de Quito in 1535, some of which had accompanied the Spanish conquistador Sebastian de Benalcazar, decided to return to what has since been called Tomebamba Province, which included what the, now are the provinces of Canar and Azuay, who founded the first seat was that of the Royal Mines of San Antonio de Hatuncañar.The real name of mine put it for one simple reason, because not far from Hatuncañar and at one point called Malal Spanish discovered a silver mine that the Indians knew how to exploit, but on a small scale, for which they set exploitation of a more advanced way.

Made the Spanish conquest, was named the Canton Canar San Antonio of the royal mines Cañar Hatun (Gran Canar) The name of San Antonio can be explained if one considers that the settlement should be given a pattern, and the employer could not be other than a saint of the Franciscan order, because the Spanish who returned from Quito between these should be wearing a religious habit of the Franciscan order, as did most of the foundations made by the conquerors.

The date of canton of Canar, dating back to June 25, 1824 as stated in the Territorial Division Act of the Republic, the Senate and House of Representatives of the Republic of Colombia, meeting in Congress when it belonged to Ecuador Gran Colombia, after independence

Thus was born the new population Hatun Cañar as part of Spanish blood and partly of Indian blood, then mixing the two gave birth to the mestizo population became predominant, however, and despite everything written down, the Canaris still struggling to keep alive their cultural identity, their worldview in essence is the spiritual component of a people.
